Il pose alors une question \u00e0 la ministre de l\u2019\u00c9ducation, Nancy Bertkowski. Le d\u00e9put\u00e9 Piquette avait amorc\u00e9 son intervention en anglais, mais d\u00e8s qu\u2019il prononce des mots en fran\u00e7ais, le pr\u00e9sident de l\u2019Assembl\u00e9e l\u00e9gislative, David Carter, l\u2019interrompt. Il lui dit&nbsp;: \u00ab&nbsp;En anglais, s\u2019il vous pla\u00eet! \u00bb. Piquette se plie \u00e0 l\u2019exigence du pr\u00e9sident et pose sa question en anglais. En revanche, il en appelle au r\u00e8glement au cours de la s\u00e9ance parlementaire. Le d\u00e9put\u00e9 croit qu\u2019il a le droit de s\u2019exprimer en fran\u00e7ais. Le pr\u00e9sident informe les parlementaires qu\u2019il r\u00e9fl\u00e9chira \u00e0 cette question pendant quelques jours. Le 9 avril 1987, il communique sa d\u00e9cision \u00e0 la Chambre&nbsp;: les d\u00e9put\u00e9s doivent s\u2019exprimer en anglais. S\u2019ils souhaitent utiliser le fran\u00e7ais, il leur faut obtenir le consentement de la Chambre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:20px\">La question de l\u2019usage du fran\u00e7ais d\u00e9cha\u00eene les passions. Une cinquantaine de Franco-Albertains applaudissent le d\u00e9put\u00e9 dans la rotonde de l\u2019Assembl\u00e9e l\u00e9gislative, le 9 avril. D\u2019autres Albertains expriment leur hostilit\u00e9, voire de la haine \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9gard des francophones, rapporte le <em>Globe and Mail<\/em> du 15 avril 1987.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"padding-top:0;padding-right:0;padding-bottom:0;padding-left:0\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:20px\">Pour faire suite au geste de Piquette, le Comit\u00e9 des \u00e9lections et privil\u00e8ges de l\u2019Assembl\u00e9e l\u00e9gislative recommande, en juin 1987, que les d\u00e9put\u00e9s obtiennent la permission du pr\u00e9sident de la Chambre avant de s\u2019exprimer dans une langue autre que l\u2019anglais. Il demande en outre au d\u00e9put\u00e9 Piquette de s\u2019excuser pour son geste.<br><br>Lors de son intervention du 27 novembre, L\u00e9o Piquette, un Franco-Albertain natif de Plamondon, rappelle que son intention n\u2019\u00e9tait pas de contester l\u2019autorit\u00e9 du pr\u00e9sident. Il insiste toutefois pour dire que s\u2019exprimer en fran\u00e7ais est un droit et non pas un privil\u00e8ge. Malgr\u00e9 cette intervention et une manifestation de 500 personnes en faveur du bilinguisme \u00e0 Edmonton, les d\u00e9put\u00e9s appuient la recommandation du Comit\u00e9 des \u00e9lections et privil\u00e8ges.<br><br>Le document contient des extraits des d\u00e9bats entre le d\u00e9put\u00e9 Piquette et le pr\u00e9sident de l\u2019Assembl\u00e9e l\u00e9gislative ainsi que de la d\u00e9cision de ce dernier.
